Smt. Nilanjana Roy is a senior disciple of Guru Jyoti Rout. Nilanjana holds a master’s degree in economics and finance, and works in Corporate Finance. She is active in the Bay Area in promoting Indian culture and traditions. She has been teaching in Jyoti Kala Mandir for more than 12 years. A Pallavi is an elaboration of pure, abstract dance without poetry or prose, based on creative counterpoint with the music. This Pallavi is a piece of original choreography by Jyoti Rout, with music composed and directed by Professor Mohini Mohan Pattnaik. It is set to raag megh. The tal is tripatta. Traditionally, Pallavis are named for the raga in which they are played. This Pallavi is unique because Guru Jyoti Rout has incorporated into her choreography all of the single-handed mudras, or hand positions, used in Odissi dance.
